Organization addresses controversy surrounding band's halftime performance in Detroit in an email to MTV News.
By James Montgomery
<P>By now, you've no doubt heard what <i>some</i> Detroit Lions fans have to say about <a href="/news/articles/1673783/nickelback-detroit-fans-petition.jhtml">Nickelback's halftime performance</a> at the team's annual Thanksgiving game (hint, it isn't good), but to date, folks <i>with</i> the Lions — and the NFL, for that matter — have remained silent on the matter.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Detroit Lions Fans Have No Love For Nickelback" id="vid:709287" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>The same cannot be said, however, for the United Way, the sponsors of the halftime show, who released a statement last week officially <a href="/news/articles/1674301/nickelback-detroit-lions-thanksgiving-game.jhtml">confirming that Nickelback were onboard</a> for the event, and have now weighed in on the controversy surrounding their performance. In particular, the organization addressed criticism from some Lions fans that an artist <i>from</i> Detroit should have been booked for the high-profile game in an email to MTV News.</P><P>"We're grateful to Nickelback for generously donating time and resources to this effort," United Way director of publicity Sal Fabens wrote. "This is a nationally televised show that historically has featured artists from many locations, such as Indiana's John Mellencamp [and] New York's Mary J. Blige ... For the past two years, we featured Motown artists and Detroit's own Kid Rock, but the performers have never been limited to those from Detroit."</P><P>Fabens also wrote that, in one way, the fact that some 75,000 fans have signed an online <a href="http://www.change.org/petitions/the-detroit-lions-replace-nickelback-as-the-halftime-show-for-the-thanksgiving-game" target="_blank">petition</a> calling for the band's ouster is fitting, since the theme of the United Way's halftime performance is "Live United."</P><P>"This is a call to action, an invitation for everyone to join us, regardless of their stance on various issues, to move forward on creating opportunities for a better life for all," he wrote. "It's going to take everyone working together ... to make progress on ambitious goals in the areas of education, income and health across the country ... We invite varying points of view and voices to all come together so we can move forward.</P><P>"We would hope that various opinions about a rock band don't overshadow the fact that the band's generosity is helping to bring attention to this message," Fabens' email concluded.</p>

She's a north of the border native, so it seems fitting that Shenae Grimes was among the star power tapped for the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto, Canada on Sunday night (June 17).
After skipping out on the red carpet arrivals, the "90210" hottie added her hipness to the scenery as she took the stage alongside Jesse Giddings to dole out one of the ceremony's awards.
As for the show, the 2012 MMVAs were co-hosted by LMFAO while having featured performances by top acts including Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Nelly Furtado, Hedley and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Meanwhile, Carly Rae Jepsen took top honors for "Call Me Maybe" while other winners included Perry, Bieber and top nominee Marianas Trench.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/u2/news.jhtml">U2</a> singer Bono was already an obscenely wealthy man before Friday's (May 18) <a href="/news/articles/1685335/facebook-ipo-diary.jhtml">Facebook IPO</a>

But thanks to the 2.3 percent stake in the social networking site held by his Elevation Partners investment group (it is unknown how much of the Facebook take is directly held by Bono) it was reported that his nest egg could grow exponentially when Friday's first day of trading on the company's stock is over. The total haul? More than <a href="/news/articles/1685361/bono-facebook-stake-richest-rocker.jhtml">$1.5 billion</a>

According to <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/bonos-investment-firm-may-make-1-5-billion-in-facebook-ipo-20120518" target="_blank"><I>Rolling Stone</I></a> the singer, who cannot sell all his shares at once, has pledged to use much of the money raised from his investments to aid charity work in Africa.</P><P>Bono addressed the rumors of his (alleged) impending money bomb while speaking to MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell on Friday morning. "Contrary to reports, I'm not a billionaire or going to be richer than any Beatle -- and not just in the sense of money, by the way; the Beatles are untouchable -- those billionaire reports are a joke," he said. "In Elevation, we invest other people's money -- endowments, pension funds. We do get paid, of course. But, you know, I felt rich when I was 20 years old and my wife was paying my bills. Just being in a band, I've always felt blessed. I got interested in technology because I'm an artist, I'm interested in the forces that shape the world, politics, religion, the stuff we've been talking about today. Technology is huge, I wanted to learn about it. People might say that's odd, but I think it's odd if artists aren't interested in the world around them. I'm always chasing that. Facebook are an amazing team, a brilliant team. It's a technology that brings people together."</P><P>But if one person were to obtain that windfall, what could $1.5 billion buy you? We broke it down, by-the-numbers:</P><P><B>6.9 million</B> Famous for his signature Bulgari shades, if Bono were to get his hands on the full stash, he could hit the <a href="http://shopping.yahoo.com/842590951-8025-u2-bono-97013-sunglasses-size-133mm-ivory/" target="_blank">Amazon.com marketplace</a> and get nearly seven million pair for cheap at $215.77 a piece.</P><P><B>12.5</B> The giant claw stage that U2 schlepped around the world for their record-setting 360 Tour was insanely expensive. With each of the three structures they built coming in at $40 million a piece, Bono could build nine more with the Facebook loot.</P><P><B>300,000</B> Speaking U2 tours, on their famous 1992 Zoo TV outing, one of the highlights were the blinged-out Trabant cars that were hung from the lighting rigs. The famously low-budget East German cars were never expensive, but if Bono were ever thinking of expanding his car collection, he could snatch up <a href="http://www.ooyyo.com/used-cars/trabant-601/germany" target="_blank">more than 300,000</a> 1989 models for the money.</P><P><B>39.4 million</B>: In the recent documentary, "From the Sky Down," U2 basically admitted that they'd gotten a bit full of themselves by the time their 1988 ode to Americana, <I>Rattle and Hum</I>, was released. If Bono is feeling especially embarrassed about all the cowboy hats and blues discovery of that era, he could try to wipe out some trace of it by buying nearly 40 million Blu-Ray copies of the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rattle-Hum-Blu-ray/dp/B000RGUNHW/ref=tmm_blu_title_0" target="_blank">DVD from Amazon</a>.</p>

'I've played my new record for my label and will be announcing my new Album Title in September!' Gaga tweets.
By Jocelyn Vena
<P>Wondering what <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> plans to call her next album? Well, you're going to have to wait through the summer to find out. The singer, currently on her <a href="/news/articles/1675458/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml">controversial <i>Born This Way</i> Tour</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga" target="_blank">tweeted</a> that she will make the announcement this fall. "Exciting news little monsters! I've played my new record for my label and will be announcing my new Album Title in September! X," she wrote.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Lady Gaga Has The Title And Concept For Her Next Album" id="vid:717202" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Gaga has, in fact, been playing the record for her bosses and inner circle. She also revealed on Twitter that she spun the new music, her follow-up to 2011's <i>Born This Way,</i> for her longtime pal Lady Starlight. And her co-manager Vincent Herbert had some of his own <a href="/news/articles/1686196/lady-gaga-new-album.jhtml">teases for Little Monsters</a> in an interview he gave late last month.</P><P>"[It's] just [an] insane, great record. She's on tour right now, but it's just going to be a great record. Look out for the unexpected when it comes to her," he said. "We're doing it on the road right now, so it's a little hard, but it's going to be great."</P><P>Though it's unclear how far along in the recording process she is for the release, in an interview with MTV News in December, she already had the <a href="/news/articles/1675458/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml">highly anticipated album title</a> in mind. "I've started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place," she said. "I'm excited to put it out, but it's not done yet. So I'll put it out when it's done."</P><P>Her producer, Fernando Garibay, confirmed in a separate interview last year that Mother Monster would be working on the album while on tour. "I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now. I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs. They're already incredible songs. But I feel like she's so young," he said, adding that at the time, the record was in its early stages and that "there's a lot of room to grow."</P><P>"The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms," he said. "Wherever she's at, we'll make it."</p>

Kristen Stewart arrived at LAX this evening to catch a departing flight. Kristen wore a bright red sweatshirt as she made her way into the terminal. The Snow White and the Huntsman star is hitting the road to continue promoting the hit movie in Australia. Charlize Theron was also at the airport with her son, Jackson, though she may be taking a different trip. Leading man Chris Hemsworth is already Down Under, having arrived in his native country earlier today. Kristen and Chris are expected at the Sydney premiere of SWATH on Tuesday, when they'll hit the red carpet at the Westfield Bondi Junction with director Rupert Sanders.
Kristen may still be focused on her current big screen project, but soon she'll switch gears to the Twilight franchise. There's already hype surrounding the final installment, which comes out in November: witness the latest Entertainment Weekly cover featuring Bella, Edward, and their daughter, Renesmee.

Director Adam Shankman explains how '80s icons like Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson ended up in the movie musical.
By Amy Wilkinson
Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta in "Rock of Ages"
Photo:
The '80s are alive and well in director Adam Shankman's movie musical "Rock of Ages," which shimmied into theaters Friday (June 15).
Based on the hit Broadway production of the same name, the flick follows would-be musician Drew Boley (Diego Boneta) as he falls for new-in-town Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) and lands his big break opening for rock legend Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) at the famed Bourbon Room.
The soundtrack is stuffed with the era's biggest hits like "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," "Don't Stop Believin' " and "I Want to Know What Love Is," but the toe-tapping tunes aren't the only throwbacks to the decade of decadence. Pay close attention and you'll spot a number of '80s music mavens.
A major plotline in the film centers around conservative advocate Patricia Whitmore's (Catherine Zeta-Jones) attempt to shutter the Bourbon Room and reclaim the Sunset Strip for more wholesome pursuits. The struggle reaches its climax in a rocking protest outside the club with Patricia and company facing off against club employee Lonny (Russell Brand) while singing a mash-up of "We Built This City" and "We're Not Gonna Take It." It's here among the assembled masses that you'll recognize a few familiar faces, like Skid Row's Sebastian Bach and Debbie Gibson. But how did the cameos come to be?
"I had said if anyone from the period wants to participate, there is a scene I'm happy to accommodate, 'cause it just felt right. ... So the studio just kind of put out the word, and that's what happened," Shankman said. "I would get the phone call the day before going, 'This is who's coming tomorrow,' and I'm like, 'Seriously?!' "
Having a bevy of rock stars on a single set might sound like a nightmare of warring egos and AquaNet, but in fact, Shankman said the stars sang for their supper, staging an impromptu concert.
"The greatest part of having those guys — [REO Speedwagon's] Kevin Cronin, [Extreme's] Nuno Bettencourt and Sebastian — all of them, our lunch that night was at 3:30 in the morning, and during lunch for the whole crew, they did a whole concert, and they sang all the songs."
Now that's a scene we want to see on the DVD bonus reel!
Check out everything we've got on "Rock of Ages."

<P>Time is ticking. And with anticipation high, the pop titan is giving her fans a small taste of the behind-the-scenes action it took to transition back to her stage show ways.</P><P>In the first of a two-part video montage segment that was posted on the singer's <a href="http://www.beyonce.com/news/the-making-of-a-concert-part-1" target="_blank">website</a>, Queen B is seen working hard almost two months prior to the gigs on everything from choreography to show concept and vocal rehearsing.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Beyoncé - "Love on Top"" id="vid:702484" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>Despite admitting a few nerves and her inclusion in the pop-star-turned-mom club, Beyoncé remained adamant about her return to the stage, "I'm enjoying being a mother, so it's like going back to my old job. It's a little strange, but it's important that you don't lose yourself and have your own passions. I'm back to work. I'm back to business."</P><P>It's the first of many candid moments in which the singer opens up and allows camera lenses to document the planning of the concerts. And by the looks of it, the chart-topper will be giving it her all. At one point, Beyoncé is seen sitting on the floor with her crew of dancers conceptualizing the event. "What I'm trying to say with the show ... yes, I had a baby, but it just made me more grounded," she says.</P><P>In comparison to her intimate <a href="/news/articles/1669179/beyonce-roseland-ballroom-concert-new-york.jhtml">four-night affair</a> at New York's Roseland Ballroom in August 2011, the Revel shows are expected to be much more of a grand spectacle, with high-tech LED, intense choreography and video backdrops.</P><P>Positivity goes a long way, as her choreographer Frank Gatson Jr. co-signs the singer's intent to create a stellar event. "I think this show has the potential to be one of the greatest shows we've done. People, re-sit and listen to Beyoncé, we will have a brilliant show at Revel," he said.</P><P><i>Will you be seeing Beyoncé in concert this Memorial Day weekend? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

We take a look back at a hectic seven days for the actress.

Lindsay Lohan leaves the hospital after her car accident on June 8
Photo:
If your week involved smashing a Porsche into an 18-wheeler, being linked in headlines to a porn star, and having the paramedics called to your hotel room, there's a pretty good chance you are probably James Bond. Or Lindsay Lohan.
Of course, one of those folks is fictional. The other is very much real — and just had a really crazy week. Yes, the Lind-sanity is still with us, as the actress wrapped an impressive seven-day stretch that began with a car wreck (and hospitalization), rolled right on with some salacious headlines and wrapped with some drama at the Ritz-Carlton (and a rumored hospitalization).
Here's a look back at Lindsay Lohan's rather hectic week, one that would give any mere mortal (or secret agent) pause. But not her.
Friday, June 8: Lohan is taken to the hospital after smashing her Porsche into an 18-wheeler on the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. Luckily, she wasn't seriously injured — though the same couldn't be said for her vehicle, as photos showed the Porsche with a severely damaged front end, a smashed windshield and a deployed airbag.
Monday, June 11: Reports surface that Lohan may have lied to police about just who was driving the car. She had originally told responding officers she was sitting in the passenger seat, with her assistant behind the wheel, which supposedly didn't corroborate with the story her assistant told police. Uh-oh.
Tuesday, June 12: Lohan's name is attached to "The Canyons," a Hollywood drama from writer Bret Easton Ellis that will also feature adult-film star James Deen. Lohan will reportedly play Tara, girlfriend to Deen's Christian, a "trust fund kid, power player and major manipulator, who is a film producer that enjoys filming his own three-way sex sessions."
Thursday, June 14: "The Canyons" producer Braxton Pope acknowledges Lindsay's reputation to MTV News, saying, "What's kind of lost in a lot of the Lindsay discussions is the fact that Lindsay is a very talented actress. She's very charismatic and she has a lot of acting skills. So her lifestyle and some of the things that she's gone through have tended to kind of overwhelm the fact, but Lindsay has kind of real talent. So for this part, we felt that she was really the right actor for a host of different reasons."
Friday, June 15: A California news station erroneously reports that Lohan had been taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a hotel room. While paramedics had been called to her penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton, they left the scene without the actress, and her reps insisted that all she was suffering from was "exhaustion and dehydration" and said Lohan was actually napping after a grueling stretch of shooting the upcoming Lifetime movie "Liz & Dick."
